Mesa Water Education and Career Center

The Mesa Water Education and Career Center (MWECC) is the only facility of its kind in Orange County, offering an interactive experience where fifth-grade students, residents, civic groups, businesses and community organizations can discover the story behind Mesa Water’s 100% local water supply.

The 2,400-square-foot center features more than 20 hands-on exhibits, including the Redwood Theater and the immersive Explorer experience, bringing the story of the Orange County Groundwater Basin and Mesa Water’s unique ancient amber water to life.

Co-located at the MWECC is the Mesa Water Reliability Facility (MWRF), Mesa Water’s treatment facility. The MWRF first opened in 2000 and was upgraded with state-of-the-art nanofiltration technology in 2013. Two groundwater wells at this location pump amber-tinted water from an aquifer deep below Costa Mesa. This 12,000-year-old groundwater, lovingly nicknamed “redwood tea,” is naturally tinted from ancient redwood tree remnants that carbon date back more than 30,000 years. Advanced nanofiltration removes the amber tint, allowing the water to become part of Mesa Water’s local water supply. The “redwood tea” is safe to drink straight from the ground, but we know Mesa Water customers like their water crystal clear! 

Today, visitors can experience the journey of local water from aquifer to tap, and even sample the famous “redwood tea” while learning how Mesa Water delivers 100% local, reliable, clean and safe water to the community.

NATURE TELLS THE STORY

Beyond the center’s interactive exhibits, visitors can continue their experience outdoors in the redwood forest and demonstration garden. Mesa Water planted redwood trees in 2010 as a tribute to the trees that once stood tall in Southern California. These redwood trees create a living connection to Mesa Water’s ancient amber groundwater and help bring the area’s unique water history to life.

The demonstration garden features water-wise plants and landscaping practices suited to Southern California’s climate. Visitors can explore how thoughtful plant selection and efficient landscaping can create a vibrant outdoor space while using water wisely.

Together, these outdoor spaces provide visitors with another engaging way to learn about Mesa Water’s unique water supply and the important connection between water and the environment.

Mesa Water’s Water-Wise Demonstration Garden and Mini Redwood Forest

The lush grounds at the Mesa Water Education Center feature a water-wise demonstration garden with California-native plants and flowers, promoting water efficient landscaping. Majestic redwood trees tower over the Center, as a homage to the redwood forest that once grew in the area. The redwood trees prefer a moist environment, so an automated mist system keeps the trees hydrated under the warm Orange County sun.

Bring your classroom to the MWECC for a no cost, hands-on learning experience!

Designed for fifth-grade students, each field trip accommodates up to 35 students and includes a guided tour of the center’s exhibits, engaging activities and opportunities to learn about our 100% local water supply. Students will also learn about water treatment and careers in the water industry.

Educational programming aligns with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and STEM learning. Transportation costs are covered by Mesa Water.

Do you offer public tours at the MWECC?

How much does a field trip cost?

Field trips are offered at no cost and transportation fees are covered by Mesa Water for participating schools within the Newport Mesa Unified School District.

How long does a typical field trip or tour last?

Fifth-grade field trips last approximately two hours and are offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Other tours and group visits can last up to one hour, depending on the program and group.

Do you offer group tours year-round?

Yes. Tours for established community groups, industry groups and educational programs are available year-round, subject to availability and scheduling.

How far in advance should teachers schedule a field trip?

Field trips must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. Earlier reservations are encouraged, as field trip availability may be limited during the school year.

Can I take photos or videos during my visit?

Yes. Visitors are welcome to take photos and videos during their visit. Please be mindful of any school or organizational policies regarding photography and recording.

What grade level are the exhibits best suited for?

The exhibits and educational programming are designed primarily for fifth-grade students learning about the natural water cycle. However, visitors of other ages are welcome to explore the center, and programs can be adapted for different audiences when appropriate.

Who is eligible to reserve the MWECC and what types of events can be held there?

The Mesa Water Education and Career Center (MWECC) is available for use by nonprofit community groups and organizations for meetings, workshops, educational programs, presentations, and other community-focused events. All events are subject to facility availability and MWECC guidelines.
