Mesa Water Participating in Streams of Hope Campaign in Honor of Earth Month in April

COSTA MESA, Calif.; April 12, 2022 – Mesa Water District (Mesa Water®) is celebrating Earth Month 2022 through participation in the Streams of Hope Public Art and Community Cleanup Campaign. The campaign is a community awareness and action initiative created by the Wyland Foundation to bring attention to the preservation of local watersheds.

The campaign, which runs throughout the month of April, showcases 36” X 80” self-standing statuettes of “Stella” – a baby California Grey Whale – painted by local artists in collaboration with famed marine life artist Wyland. Completed Stella statuettes will be displayed in high-profile locations throughout Orange County during the month of April. Mesa Water’s completed statuette is located at John Wayne Airport – a Mesa Water customer. The whale can be found in the Terminal A Baggage Claim on Carousel 1, for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. The piece is named “Set in Motion, A Change for the Ocean.”

Mesa Water commissioned children’s book illustrator and artist Bonnie Matthews, a Costa Mesa resident, to paint artwork that reflects the importance of keeping waterways clean from debris. An advocate for sea life and the environment, Bonnie is as dedicated to clean, safe water as Mesa Water. Her colorful whimsical artistic style and passion for a cleaner environment is evident in Mesa Water’s whale statuette.

“Mesa Water is committed to raising awareness about water and the importance of ensuring clean, safe water for the community we serve,” says Marice H. DePasquale, Mesa Water Board President. “We are thrilled to be a partner in this unique public art campaign, to educate residents about the importance of protecting our waterways and ocean from pollution. We hope to delight John Wayne Airport travelers with an important message through art.”

Additionally, as part of the campaign, Orange County residents are encouraged to participate in a local waterway or beach cleanup event. Cleanup locations can be found on the Streams of Hope website, or community members can lead their own with friends and family.

Streams of Hope is created in partnership with the Wyland Foundation, Municipal Water District of Orange County, OC Conservation Corps, and the County of Orange and is supported by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the Orange County Department of Education’s Inside the Outdoors, KCAL9/KCBS2, and Mesa Water District.
