Mesa Water District Receives Top Honor in Government Accounting and Financial Reporting

Costa Mesa, Calif. (November 24, 2020) – Mesa Water District (Mesa Water®) has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government agency and its management.

Mesa Water was recognized for its CAFR, which provides an overview of the District’s financial performance and activities, for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019.

“Mesa Water’s Board of Directors and staff are dedicated to achieving the highest level of excellence in all operations of the District, including financial reporting,” says Shawn Dewane, Mesa Water Board President. “Mesa Water goes above and beyond the requirements of the generally accepted accounting principles to provide a wide variety of information that is useful to the public in evaluating the District’s financial condition. This outstanding recognition further illustrates Mesa Water as an industry leader in transparency and excellent financial management practices.”

The CAFR is judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the GFOA program, which includes demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential stakeholders to read the CAFR.

In addition, Mesa Water’s Financial Services Department will receive an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement (AFRA), for earning the Certificate of Achievement.

The GFOA advances excellence in government finance by providing best practices, professional development, resources, and practical research for more than 21,000 members and the communities they serve.
